What trilobites were
Trilobites were among the first arthropods and among the most successful early animals. They appeared about 521 million years ago and vanished at the end of the Permian, 251.9 million years ago, after almost 270 million years and more than 22,000 described species. Their hard calcite shells fossilised well, which is why there are so many of them.
They ranged from a few millimetres to more than 70 centimetres long. The name refers to the three lobes running down the body: a central axis and two side lobes.
Why Morocco dominates the trilobite market
Morocco's Anti-Atlas exposes Cambrian, Ordovician and Devonian rocks rich in trilobites, and local diggers and preparators have made it the world's main source. On 28 October 2026, 144 of the 179 trilobites listed by the dealer FossilEra came from Morocco.
Moroccan rocks also matter to science. Hupetina antiqua from Morocco is a contender for the oldest known trilobite. The Early Ordovician Fezouata Formation near Zagora preserves soft tissue, and three Moroccan trilobites about 478 million years old keep fossilised soft parts. The three-pronged Walliserops comes from Jebel Oufatene near Fezzou.

Real, restored or fake: what to check
Because demand is high, Moroccan trilobites come in every degree of authenticity. Honest dealers disclose restoration; the problems are casts and undisclosed composites.
- Casts: resin or plaster copies, often set in real rock. They feel light and warm, show identical copies across listings, and lack the fine shell texture under a loupe.
- Composites: a real trilobite assembled from parts of several, or set into a matrix it did not come from. Look for a colour or texture break around the body.
- Restoration: missing spines or segments rebuilt with filler. Normal on spiny species, but it must be disclosed and priced in. A UV lamp often shows filler as a different glow.
- Over-preparation: real fossil, but the surrounding rock carved to look better. Acceptable if honest, but check the rock looks natural.
- Ask for the species, the locality, and a written statement of any restoration.
Care
Fossil trilobites are mostly calcite: keep them away from acids and avoid washing; dust with a soft brush. Spiny species are very fragile, so lift them by the matrix.
Questions collectors ask
Are Moroccan trilobites real?
Most are real fossils, but casts, composites and undisclosed restorations exist. Ask for the species, locality and a written restoration statement, and inspect the shell texture and the join with the rock.
How old are trilobites?
Trilobites lived from about 521 to 251.9 million years ago. Moroccan specimens are mostly Cambrian, Ordovician or Devonian.
How much is a trilobite worth?
On 28 October 2026, fixed-price eBay listings for Moroccan trilobites had a median asking price of $82. Rare spiny Moroccan species listed at FossilEra for $3,950 to $10,500.
