Malachite

Malachite is a green copper carbonate, famous for its banded and botryoidal forms. In Morocco it grows in the same copper deposits as azurite, and the two are often found on one piece.

What malachite is

Malachite is a copper carbonate hydroxide, the green partner of blue azurite. It crystallises in the monoclinic system but rarely as visible crystals: most malachite is botryoidal, fibrous or stalagmitic, built up in layers that show as concentric bands when the piece is cut or broken.

Azurite slowly turns into malachite when it takes up water. When the change keeps the original crystal shape, the result is a pseudomorph: a green malachite crystal with an azurite outline. Pieces caught halfway, blue and green side by side, are among the most sought-after copper specimens.

Malachite from Morocco

Moroccan malachite comes from the oxidised copper deposits that also give azurite, such as Touissit in the northeast and Kerrouchen in the Middle Atlas. It is mostly sold as botryoidal crusts, as mixed azurite-malachite pieces and as pseudomorphs.

Safety and care

Handling malachite is safe. Its dust is not: copper compounds are toxic when breathed or swallowed, which is why malachite is only ever cut or polished wet. Do not cut, sand or grind it at home, never use it in drinks or elixirs, and wash your hands after handling raw pieces.

Malachite is a carbonate: acids, including vinegar and lemon juice, dissolve it. Clean it with a soft dry brush or plain water and dry it straight away.

Questions collectors ask

Is malachite toxic?

It is safe to handle. Its dust is toxic if breathed or swallowed, so never cut or sand it dry and never use it in drinks or elixirs.

What is the difference between malachite and azurite?

Both are copper carbonates. Malachite is green and more stable; azurite is blue and can turn into malachite over time.

How much is malachite worth?

On 28 October 2026, fixed-price eBay listings for Moroccan malachite had a median asking price of $23. FossilEra listed malachite from $19 to $3,250.
