How a desert rose forms

A desert rose is not a fossil or a flower but a crystal cluster. It grows in sand or clay a few metres to a few tens of metres below the surface, just above a shallow water table rich in sulfate. As the hot climate evaporates that water, its dissolved minerals concentrate and gypsum crystals start to grow from a seed point in every direction, pushing the sand aside and trapping grains inside them.

The crystals grow as flat lenses, and their overlapping blades look like petals. Most desert roses are gypsum; some are baryte, like the rose rocks of Oklahoma. French Wikipedia notes that desert roses can exceed a hundred kilograms.

Desert roses from Morocco

Desert roses come from the Saharan countries, Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia among them, and are sold everywhere along the desert routes. Sellers often call them 'selenite' roses: selenite is the clear crystalline form of gypsum, so the name is loose but not wrong. Sand is part of a natural desert rose and gives it its colour.

How to judge and care for a desert rose

Look for many thin, sharp petals, a balanced shape and no broken blades.

  • Gypsum is very soft (2 on the Mohs scale, scratched by a fingernail) and the petals snap easily.
  • Gypsum dissolves slowly in water: never wash a desert rose or leave it in a damp place. Dust it with a soft brush or a blower.
  • Desert roses are not considered hazardous to handle.
