Barite

Barite is barium sulfate, a white to honey-coloured mineral so dense that a small piece feels like metal. At Mibladen it forms the pale blades that carry the district's red vanadinite.

What barite is

Barite, also spelled baryte, is barium sulfate and the main source of the element barium. Its name comes from the Greek barys, heavy: with a specific gravity around 4.5 it is far heavier than quartz or calcite, and that weight in the hand is the quickest way to recognise it.

It belongs to a family of sulfates that includes celestine (strontium) and anglesite (lead). It is usually white or colourless, but impurities give it yellow, honey, blue or brown tints, and it grows as flat tabular blades, often in fans and rosettes.

Barite at Mibladen

Barite is found worldwide, Morocco included. For collectors its Moroccan importance is as a partner: in the Mibladen district near Midelt, the old lead mines worked from 1912 to 1975, white to cream barite blades are the classic matrix for red vanadinite, and the colour contrast is a big part of what makes those pieces sell. Barite alone, as clean blades or rosettes, is also sold from the same district.

How to judge and care for barite

Look for sharp, unbroken blade edges, good transparency and an attractive arrangement. On vanadinite-on-barite pieces, judge the barite too: well-formed blades raise the value, crushed or dirty ones lower it.

  • Barite is soft (3 to 3.5) with a perfect cleavage: blades split and chip easily.
  • Barium sulfate is practically insoluble and is considered low in toxicity, but if the piece carries vanadinite or galena, treat it as a lead mineral and wash your hands.
  • Clean with plain water and a soft brush; avoid heat and sudden temperature changes.

Questions collectors ask

Why is barite so heavy?

It contains barium, a heavy element. Its specific gravity of about 4.5 makes it noticeably heavier than most light-coloured minerals.

Is barite toxic?

Barium sulfate is insoluble and low in toxicity. Barite pieces carrying lead minerals such as vanadinite or galena should be handled like lead minerals: wash your hands afterwards.

How much is barite worth?

On 28 October 2026, fixed-price eBay listings for Moroccan barite had a median asking price of $68. FossilEra listed barite from $19 to $795.
