Azurite

Azurite is a copper carbonate with one of the deepest blues in the mineral world. Morocco's Touissit district is one of today's main sources of sharp, lustrous azurite crystals.

What azurite is

Azurite is a basic copper carbonate that forms where copper ore weathers near the surface. Its blue comes from copper itself, the same copper(II) that colours malachite green. It fizzes in hydrochloric acid, as carbonates do, and that fizz together with the deep blue is the classic field test.

Azurite is less stable than malachite. Over time, with water and carbon dioxide, it can turn into malachite while keeping its crystal shape. These pseudomorphs, green crystals with an azurite outline, and pieces caught halfway, blue and green together, are among the most attractive copper specimens.

Azurite from Morocco

Morocco has become one of the most important modern sources of fine azurite. The Touissit district in the northeast is known for sharp, lustrous, deep-blue prismatic crystals, often in clusters. Kerrouchen, in the Middle Atlas near Khénifra, also produces azurite crystals that collectors seek out.

How to judge an azurite specimen

What raises the value of an azurite:

  • Crystal form: sharp, lustrous prisms beat crusts and nodules.
  • Colour: deep, even azure; a black or dull surface lowers value.
  • Contrast: azurite with green malachite or on pale matrix displays well.
  • Condition: crystal tips and edges intact on the front.

Care, light and heat

A common belief says azurite must be kept in the dark to keep its colour. Paul Desautels, former curator of gems and minerals at the Smithsonian, called this a likely urban legend: azurite is stable under ordinary storage and keeps its blue for a long time. Heat is the real enemy; heating destroys azurite, so never clean or mount it with anything hot.

Clean it dry with a soft brush. Avoid acids, which dissolve it, and ultrasonic baths. Azurite is a copper mineral: wash your hands after handling and do not ingest it.

Questions collectors ask

Is azurite the same as lapis lazuli?

No. Azurite is a copper carbonate mineral. Lapis lazuli is a rock made mostly of lazurite, a silicate. Both are blue, but azurite is softer, fizzes in acid and has a light blue streak.

How much is azurite worth?

Most Moroccan azurite is affordable: fixed-price eBay listings had a median asking price of $24 on 28 October 2026. Fine crystal clusters cost hundreds of dollars or more.

Does azurite fade in light?

Azurite is stable under ordinary display conditions. Heat damages it; light is not a proven problem.

Why does azurite turn green?

Azurite slowly alters to malachite, another copper carbonate, which is green. Pieces caught in the middle of this change show both colours.
